Before you buy an eSIM

  • Unlock your phone

A phone locked to one carrier will reject eSIMs from other providers. Phones bought outright from Apple, Samsung or Google are unlocked; carrier-financed phones often are not.

  • Check the regional version

The same model can ship with or without eSIM depending on where it was sold. Phones from mainland China are the most common exception.

  • Install before you fly

Add the eSIM over Wi-Fi at home, then switch it on when you land. Most providers start the plan only once it connects at your destination.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?

Search your model above or pick your brand in the step-by-step tab. Without the list, dial *#06# on the phone: if an EID (a 32-digit eSIM ID) appears, the phone supports eSIM. You can also look for "Add eSIM" in Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or Settings → Connections → SIM manager (Samsung).

Which iPhones support eSIM?

Every iPhone from the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR (2018) onwards supports eSIM, including the iPhone SE (2020 and 2022). iPhone 13 and newer can keep two eSIMs active at once. iPhone 14 and later sold in the US, and the iPhone Air everywhere, are eSIM-only.

Which Samsung Galaxy phones support eSIM?

Galaxy S20 and later (except the S20 FE), Note 20, all Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models, and recent A-series phones such as the A35, A55 and A56 support eSIM. Galaxy models sold in mainland China and Hong Kong do not.

My phone is on the list. Can I still get "eSIM not supported"?

Yes, for two reasons. A carrier-locked phone only accepts that carrier's eSIMs, so ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel. And some regional versions of a supported model ship without eSIM; *#06# showing an EID confirms yours has it.

Can I use an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?

Yes. Almost every eSIM phone supports dual SIM, so you can keep your home SIM for calls and texts while the travel eSIM handles data. Phones marked "Dual eSIM" can also run two eSIMs at once without any physical SIM.

My phone does not support eSIM. What are my options?

Buy a local physical SIM card when you land, rent a pocket Wi-Fi hotspot, or use your carrier's roaming pass. If you are replacing your phone soon, any flagship from 2020 or later will support eSIM.
